Chapter 14

CHAPTER 14 Since Merle and Pearl were living in the area during the time of Jesus, it was easy for them to imagine the scene the tour guide described. When Mary was a young woman, God sent the angel Gabriel here to Nazareth to deliver a message to her. Mary was engaged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of King David.

"Greetings, favored woman!" Gabriel announced. "The Lord is with you!" Mary was confused and frightened. She tried to think of what the angel could mean. "The Lord is with me?" she wondered. "Don't be frightened," the angel told her. "God is very happy with you. You will become pregnant and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be very great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord will give him the throne of his ancestor David. And he will reign over Israel forever; his Kingdom will never end." "How can this happen?" Mary asked. The angel replied, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will cover you. So your baby boy will be holy, and he will be called the Son of God!" Mary responded, "I am the Lord's servant. May everything you have said about me come true." And then the angel left her.

"The Bible tells us, 'In the beginning the Word already existed,'" the guide explained. "'The Word was with God, and the Word was God.' Here, in this very spot, the Word became human. God became man. Jesus became a baby." "The Word is another name for Jesus?" Merle asked in a whisper. Pearl nodded, her eyes welling up.
