Earthquake means shaking earth. Each year there are a million earthquakes around the world. Some places have more earthquakes than others. Some earthquakes are strong while others are only gentle. An earthquake can happen at any time. When the earth shakes, everything moves around. So it is useful to have an emergency plan to help keep you safe and out of danger in an earthquake.

Talk to your family, your teacher and your friends when you make a plan. Everyone must know what to do if an earthquake happens. You need to talk about where to go in an earthquake. If you are inside, under a table, desk or bed, are good places because nothing can fall on you there. Remember to stay away from any windows.

An earthquake might happen while you're outside. If you are not in the house or the classroom, you must get down low in an open place. Keep away from any buildings, power lines or trees. You need to talk about a safe place for everyone to meet after an earthquake. Your family or your teacher will want to know if anyone is hurt or missing.

Sometimes an earthquake happens at night. Don't get up if you are in bed. Stay there and put your pillow over your head. Or, if you can, get under the bed. An earthquake might happen while you're in the car. The driver should slow down and stop at an open place. Keep your seat belt on and stay in the car until the shaking stops.
