6 Rice is Nice

Rice is Nice written by John Lockyer

paddies More than half the people in the world eat rice. Some people eat rice every day. Rice grows in special fields called paddies.

sushi Toshi lives in Japan. He puts salt, sugar, and vinegar on the cooked rice. He spreads the rice onto sheets of seaweed. Then he puts fish and cucumber on top of the rice. He rolls up the seaweed with a bamboo mat. He cuts the roll into slices that he eats with chopsticks. Toshi uses rice to make sushi.

risotto Marco lives in Italy. He puts the rice into a pot with some vegetable stock. He stirs the rice, and then adds more vegetable stock. He stirs and stirs until the rice is hot and sticky. He adds some ham, peas, and cheese. He puts the rice into a bowl, and he eats it with a spoon. Marco uses rice to make risotto.

pilau Suni lives in India. She puts cold, cooked rice into a hot pan. She puts in some spices, too. Then she stirs and stirs the rice until the spices are cooked. She adds beans, tomatoes, and fish to the rice. She puts the rice onto a thin pancake that she eats with her fingers. Suni uses rice to make pilau.

Maria lives in Spain. She puts rice, tomatoes, onions, olives, and lots of vegetable stock into a large pan. She stirs everything until it is cooked. paella Maria adds shellfish to the rice. She puts the rice and shellfish into a dish, and she eats it with a fork. Maria uses rice to make paella.
