21 Paper Making

We can find paper in lots of places. Look around you. Can you see something made from paper? What are some other things that are made from paper? Paper is easy to make. We can use old paper to make new paper.

To make your own paper you will need: old pieces of paper, scissors, a bowl, some water, a whisk, a splatter screen, (used to cover a frying pan) a tray. Set everything out so you can get it when you need it.

First Steps: 1. Rip or use scissors to cut the paper into small pieces. 2. Place the paper in a bowl. 3. Put some water in with the paper. 4. Leave the paper in the water until it turns very soft.

Second Steps: 5. When the paper is very soft, whisk it together. 6. Keep whisking until the paper looks and feels mushy. Mushy paper is called pulp. 7. Next, place the splatter screen on the tray. 8. use your hands or a spoon to get some pulp from the bowl. 9. Put the pulp all over the splatter screen.

Third Steps: 10. use your hands or the spoon again to push the water out of the pulp. 11. Keep pushing the pulp until the water stops dripping into the tray. 12. Tip the water out of the tray and dry the tray. 13. Now turn the screen and the paper over and onto the tray. The new paper will drop off the screen in one piece.
