berries Long before farming began, people found their food where it grew. When food and water ran out and there were no more animals to catch, everyone had to move to the next place, to find more.
Farming began when everyone learned to grow their food in one place, near water. The farmers learned which plants and trees grew the best food. They also knew which animals would give them the best milk and meat. cattle
Farmers began to live together, and they grew food on good land near their homes. Everyone made much better homes to live in. Homes that would last a long time, because they never had to move on to the next place. communities
Some farmers had more food than they needed to feed their own children. Every week they would send food far away, to sell or trade for other things they needed. to market
cotton Not all plants and animals were farmed for food. Some plants and animals were farmed to make things. Plants like cotton, can be turned into clothes. Wool from sheep, can be turned into warm clothes and blankets. Can you think of other things that can be made from plants or made by animals?
