3 Knock, Knock!

Knock, Knock! retold by Pam Holden illustrated by Richard Hoit

Once upon a time there were three bears. There was a big Father Bear, a middle-sized Mother Bear, and a little Baby Bear. One morning their food was too hot. "Let's go for a walk before we eat our porridge," said Mother Bear.

Yum! Soon a little girl came to their house. Her name was Goldilocks. She knocked on the door. Knock! Knock! She opened it and went inside. She saw three bowls of porridge on the bears' table. "I feel hungry," she said. Goldilocks ate some porridge in the big bowl. "This is too hot," she said. "I'll try the middle-sized bowl. No, it's too sweet." So Goldilocks tried the small bowl. "This is delicious," she said, and she ate it all up.

Goldilocks sat down on a big chair. "This one is too high for me," she said to herself. "I'll try the middle-sized chair. No, this one is too wide for me." Crack! So she sat down on the little chair, but she was too heavy! The little chair went CRACK and it broke into pieces.

Goldilocks felt tired, so she lay down on a big bed. "This one is too hard," she said. "I'll try the middle-sized bed. No! This one is too soft for me." So she lay down on the little bed, and she went to sleep.

Soon the three bears came back to their house. "Someone's been eating my porridge," growled Father Bear in his big voice. "Someone's been eating my porridge, too," said Mother Bear in her middle-sized voice. "Someone's been eating my porridge," cried Baby Bear in his little voice. "Look! It's all gone!"
