24 To The Rescue

To the Rescue written by Dawn McMillan illustrated by Enrique Vignolo

"It's a good day for fishing," Luke said, as his dad put the boat in the water. "I'm happy you could come with us, Alex." "It's a good day for eating pizza, too," Alex laughed. "My Nan has made us pizza for lunch."

Dad and Luke and Alex set out in the boat, across the bay. Luke's dad found a place where the water was deep. "We'll get some good fish in this place," he said. Luke and Dad and Alex put their lines in the water. They waited. But the fish didn't bite. They put new bait on the hooks. But still the fish didn't bite. "Dad," said Luke. "Let's have our lunch now." "That pizza smells good," said Dad. "But I think we need to go back in. The wind has come up."

Luke was pleased they were going back. The waves were bigger now. Suddenly Luke shouted, "Dad! Alex! Look over there! There's something in the water." "Where?" Dad asked. "I see it!" said Alex. "You're right, boys," said Dad. "There is something there! I'll turn the boat around."

Luke said, "It's a kayak, Dad! There's someone in the water!" Dad shouted, "Luke, get my phone. Call for help. Tell them where we are and what's going on."

Dad took the boat near to the young woman. "Give me the rope, Alex! shouted Dad. "Luke, take the wheel. Keep the boat still!" he said, as he tried to get the rope to the woman. "Catch it!" Alex and Luke shouted together. "She tried," said Dad. "I'll have another try."
