22 Surfing Surprise

Surfing Surprise written by Suzette Toms illustrated by Michael Cashmore-Hingley

In the summer Shaun loved staying with his grandparents. They lived near the beach. This year Uncle Peter was showing him how to surf. "Morning, Sport," called Uncle Peter, "Are you ready? Let's go!"

The road to the beach went around turns and up and over the hills. Then, there was the bright blue sea and a long sandy beach, They were there!

First, Uncle Peter put Shaun's surfboard beside his in the sand. He showed Shaun how to paddle through the water, move to his knees, and then get up on to his feet.

Next, Uncle Peter put Shaun's board in the small surf. Shaun lay on top as it floated on the water. Uncle Peter turned it to catch a wave. Shaun felt the wave push the board to the beach. They did this again and again, with Shaun trying to get up on the board. He fell into the water a lot, but he didn't give up.

Then, uncle Peter took his own board into the surf and pulled Shaun out to deeper water. Shaun was scared in the bigger waves. He tried again and again to get up on the board. On his next try, he wobbled a bit but he stayed up. He was surfing! Uncle Peter cheered as Shaun rode his board all the way to the beach.
