20 Pirate Petes Ghost

Pirate Pete's Ghost written by John Lockyer illustrated by Samer Hatam

The boys stood on the steps by the hill. "This tunnel was used by pirates," said Max. "Let's go inside and have a look." "Why did pirates use the tunnel?" Harry asked. "It is near the seat" said Max. "It was a good place for them to hide their treasure."

The boys went into the tunnel. It was dark and cold. Tap! Tap! "I think someone or something is coming." said Max. Tap! Tap! "What is it?" asked Harry. His hands were shaking. "A rat...a cat...or Pirate Pete's ghost!" said Max. He took Harry's hand. "Come on!" he said. "Run!"

They stopped near the end of the tunnel. Harry's hands were still shaking. "Who is Pirate Pete?" he asked. Max said, "He was a pirate with only one leg. Years ago, he put some treasure in this tunnel. But when he came back to get it he couldn't find it."

Harry looked around. "Did someone take it?" he asked. "No one knows," said Max. "But Pirate Pete went on looking and looking. He never came out of the tunnel." Harry's eyes opened wide. "Never?" said Harry. "No," said Max. "And now Pirate Pete's ghost is looking for the treasure." "I don't like it here," said Harry. "Let's go."

Tap! Tap! The boys looked at each other. Max said, "Was that you?" "Not me!" said Harry. "Oh no!" they said. Tap! Tap! Max and Harry saw Pirate Pete's ghost. He was big. They saw his peg-leg. It was long. "Go away!" shouted Harry. "We don't have your treasure!" shouted Max.
