19 Camp Runaway

Camp Runaway written by Susan Hughes illustrated by Pauline Whimp

Greg did not like wilderness school. He didn't like the outdoors. He didn't like the other boys. He did not like staying on an island. He did not like boats. Greg was running away from everyone. He was running away from this place.

Greg jumped in the boat. He saw a lifejacket. He saw two paddles and a blanket. He saw the motor. Could he get it to go? Greg pulled the motor once. Nothing. He pulled it again. Nothing. Greg pulled the motor once more.

Brrrrrrrrrr! Brooom! Brooom! The motor was going. Greg took the boat across the water. He was running away from everyone. He was running away from this place!

Suddenly, a boy sat up from under the blanket. Greg was shocked! "I like to sleep in the boat," the boy said. "I like it under the stars. What's your name?" "I'm Greg," said Greg. "What's your name?" "I'm Josh," said the boy. Josh liked being outdoors all the time. He liked boats and camping. Josh liked being in the wilderness.

Just then, the motor stopped. "Oh, no!" said Greg. "Look," said Josh. "There are two paddles. We can work together." "Okay," said Greg. The two boys began to paddle.
