Donkey Rides written by Pam Holden illustrated by Kelvin Hawley
Ruby was called the Donkey Lady because she loved her three donkeys. Snowy, Blacky, and Browny lived under an enormous tree on her farm. One day, three children came to have rides. Jack rode away on the black donkey. Anna got onto the brown one. "I'll ride the white donkey," said Tom.
Tom said, "Giddyup, Snowy! Go!" but the white donkey didn't move. He just put his head down and began to eat some grass. "Giddyup, Browny," said Anna, and she rode after Jack. They went through the gate and around the pond. "Hurry up, Tom!" shouted Anna.
"Let's go!" said Tom, but Snowy stood still and shook his head. Ruby pulled and pulled on his bridle, but he just stamped his feet. "Hurry up, Tom!" shouted Jack, as he rode quickly down the hill. Ruby stood behind the naughty donkey and pushed him, but he wouldn't go.
Tom patted the donkey's neck. "Giddyup! Let's go, Snowy," said Tom. "Why won't you give me a ride?" Snowy just swished his tail. Ruby walked through the gate and called to him, "Come on, Snowy, please give Tom a good ride." But the naughty donkey didn't move.
Ruby got something out of her bag and held it up to show Snowy. When he saw the enormous carrot, he suddenly began to run fast. "Hold on tight, Tom!" shouted Ruby. Snowy ran quickly through the gate and ate up the carrot. Munch, crunch! But then he just stood still again!
