Play With Max Monkey written by Julie Ellis illustrated by Pauline Whimp
One morning, Max Monkey wanted to play. He looked in the long grass, and he found Lion hiding there. "Lion, would you like to play?" said Max. "No," said Lion. "I don't have time to play. I need to hunt today." So Max went to look for another friend.
Max Monkey looked in the bushes, and he saw Giraffe hiding there. "Would you like to play with me, Giraffe?" asked Max. "No, I wouldn't," said Giraffe. "I'm too hungry to play. I need to eat today." Max went away to find another friend.
When Max looked in the rocks, he found Snake hiding there. "Snake, will you play a game with me today?" asked Max. "Not this time," said Snake. "I'm too tired to play. I want to sleep in the sun today." So Max went to look for someone else.
Max went to the river, and he found Hippo hiding in the water. "Hippo, would you like to come out and play with me?" asked Max. "No," said Hippo. "I don't have time to play. I need to swim down the river today." Max went away to look somewhere else.
When Max Monkey looked in the trees, he found Parrot hiding there. "Parrot, would you like to play a game with me?" he asked. "No, not me," said Parrot. "I don't have time to play. I need to fly today." So Max went to find someone else.
