9 Don’t Look Back

Chapter 9 Don't Look Back Bob Dylan toured Great Britain in late 1965. Joan Baez was Bob's girlfriend and came on tour with him. It was his first time performing outside North America. He did eight shows. The documentary filmmaker D. A. Pennebaker followed Bob as he traveled around the country. He made a movie about Bob and the tour called Don't Look Back.

The film was released in 1967. It offered a candid look at a superstar. Bob Dylan comes across as cocky. He looks eager to poke fun at people who strike him as stupid, like a reporter from Time magazine. During the tour, he also broke up with Joan Baez. Joan Baez was never as big a star in England as she was in America. She expected that Bob would bring her onstage during shows. After all, that's what she'd done when he was just starting out. But never once did he ask her to sing with him. In one of her last appearances in the film, she leaves Bob's hotel room while his friends snicker at her. Don't Look Back was not a concert movie. Very little of the film showed Bob performing. Instead, it captured a very young man, not even twenty-four years old, as he was becoming world famous.

Did being famous make Bob Dylan happy? It did not seem so. The album Blonde on Blonde came out right after the British tour. The cover photo showed Bob bundled up in a heavy coat with a checked scarf around his neck. Only three years had passed since Dylan was photographed with Suze on The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan. By now Bob looked a lot

older and much less happy. While some fans consider Blonde on Blonde Dylan's best album, one song on it came under attack. "Just Like a Woman" was criticized for making women look "greedy, whining and hysterical." WOMEN'S LIB THE WOMEN'S LIBERATION MOVEMENT—WOMEN'S LIB FOR SHORT—

LEADERS OF THE MOVEMENT SUCH AS GLORIA STEINEM WANTED MORE WOMEN ADMITTED TO LAW SCHOOLS, BUSINESS SCHOOLS, AND MEDICAL SCHOOLS. THEY WANTED TO ELECT MORE WOMEN TO CONGRESS AND SEE MORE WOMEN APPOINTED JUDGES. WOMEN'S LIBBERS WANTED WOMEN TO GET PAID THE SAME AS MEN FOR DOING THE SAME JOB. AND THEY FELT HUSBANDS SHOULD SHARE IN HOUSEWORK AND HELP TO RAISE CHILDREN.
