Chapter 8 Bob Goes Electric Bob put away his acoustic guitar and switched to a Fender Stratocaster electric guitar. For his next album, his studio band was a rock-and-roll band with a full rock drum set. At the Newport Folk Festival in July 1965, Bob Dylan heard something he never had before—loud booing from the audience. Later, the story went around that the Newport crowd booed him because they did not expect Bob to come out with a rock band. That isn't true. Most fans knew that they were going to hear an "electric" Dylan. The real reason for their anger was that Dylan played a very short set. Al Kooper, who played organ for Bob that day, told writer David Dalton, "The reason they booed is because he only played for fifteen minutes, when everybody else played for forty-five minutes to an hour. They were feeling ripped off. They wanted more."

THE SOUND TRAVELS THROUGH A CORD TO AN AMPLIFIER. BOTH THE GUITAR AND THE AMPLIFIER HAVE KNOBS FOR ADJUSTING VOLUME. THERE ARE ALSO BOTH ACOUSTIC AND ELECTRIC TWELVE-STRING GUITARS. THEY ARE NOT POPULAR, BECAUSE THEY ARE HARD TO TUNE AND THEIR NECKS HAVE A TENDENCY TO WARP. TWELVE-STRING GUITARS ARE GENERALLY USED TO PLAY RHYTHM, NOT LEAD PARTS.
