CHAPTER 1 Abigail "Abbi" Wallace scanned her list one last time. Sunscreen Sunglasses Phone Money Alfalfa sprouts "Check, check, and check," she said. "Okay, I think we're good to go."

"Finally," Abbi's best friend Lydia Herrera said. "We're gonna miss the start of the costume contest if we don't hurry!" Lydia sprinted for the mudroom. It was the easiest way in and out of the castle where Abbi lived. Barkley, Abbi's chocolate Bassador (basset hound and Labrador mix), was right on her heels. Lydia's twin brother and Abbi's other best friend, Daniel, rolled his eyes. "Always in such a hurry." "Wait!" Abbi yelled. "I forgot the most important thing!" She rushed over to the big kitchen island and pointed. "The tickets! I can't reach them." The marble countertop was just at Abbi's eyeline. She couldn't stretch her arms up far enough to reach the tickets while in her wheelchair.

Lydia strolled over and handed the tickets to Abbi. Printed in big letters on each were the words Maine State Fair. ADMIT ONE.

"Now can we go?" Lydia practically whined. Barkley joined in. Abbi laughed at her friend, while Daniel lovingly shook his head. Abbi stuck the tickets in her pocket and nodded.
