The Curious Case of MISS GORGON THE HEADMASTER had been turned to stone! Arthur was so shocked by what he discovered deep in the cellar of BASKETBALL SCHOOL that he dropped his torch. CLANK!

His hand shaking with fear, he picked up the torch and shone it at poor Mr Dust. The much-loved headmaster looked like a STATUE of himself. But it was not like any STATUE Arthur had ever seen before. Mr Dust's stone eyes were wide with terror and his mouth agape in what looked like a silent scream. A scream that would be unheard for all eternity! Just as Arthur took out his magnifying glass to examine the surface of the STATUE for clues, he heard a noise in the darkness, and fled.

Arthur was the school detective. Although only twelve, he had read every Sherlock Holmes book in the library a hundred times. In honour of his hero, the genius detective, he even sported a deerstalker hat and a tweed cape. This, and his incredibly thick-lensed glasses, made him stand out at BASKERVILLE SCHOOL. Arthur delighted in this. He liked being special! Even if the bullies called him cruel names like MR GOOGLE. Something you should never, ever do. Arthur's school bag was an old-fashioned leather case, packed full of all the things a detective needs: Magnifying glass Binoculars Pencil Notepad Mirror for seeing round corners Gloves for handling evidence Fake eyebrows, nose and moustache for disguise Flask of hot tea

The boy had single-handedly solved many of BASKETBALL SCHOOL'S mysteries over the years. The school was a vast Gothic building where legends lurked in every shadow. Arthur recorded all his cases in his detective's notebook. One day he hoped they would be published, just like Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes books.
