The True Story of the LOCH NESS MONSTER NEARLY A CENTURY AGO, two naughty boys tumbled out of a cinema. Their eyes blinking in the daylight, they were in shock and awe. The pair had watched the greatest film they had ever seen in their lives.

KING KONG. It was an epic story about a giant gorilla who was stolen from his island home, imprisoned onboard an ocean liner and taken to be put on display in New York City. KING KONG ended up escaping and came to a tragic end falling from the Empire State Building. All this felt like a million miles away from the boys' quiet life on the bonny banks of Loch Ness, one of the largest lochs in Scotland. Donald and Angus had been friends since before they could remember. Now twelve years old, they spent all

day playing together. Angus had a younger sister, Rose, who was only ten. Rose was unable to hear or speak. She was a clever little girl, who loved to devour books about myths and LEGENDS. Her imagination was so strong that she would write her own stories and illustrate them beautifully. Ever since they had watched the movie, Angus and Donald's games all involved KING KONG. One would pretend to be the giant gorilla scaling the Empire State Building, or, in their case, the ruins of a castle that overlooked the loch. Meanwhile, the other would play at being a pilot in a biplane, delivering the fatal shot that toppled KING KONG. It was the most thrilling game ever.

Sometimes Rose would observe them from a distance and smile at how silly the pair looked. One evening, as they walked home along the edge of the water, Donald looked sad. "What's the matter?" asked Angus. Donald was the taller one. Angus was shorter with wonderfully knobbly knees and a fantastic explosion of ginger hair. "It's silly." "What's silly?" "Why can't we live in New York City where they've got monsters as big as skyscrapers?" This made Angus laugh. "HA! HA! You daft thing!

You do know that KING KONG fella isn't real?" Donald pretended to look shocked. "You're joking!" Then he couldn't help but smile. "Course I know KING KONG isn't real- I am not completely glaikit- but wouldn't it be marvellous if we had our own beastie here in little old Loch Ness?" "But nothing ever happens here," replied Angus. He picked up a stone and expertly skimmed it across the loch. PING! PING! PING! They both looked out as the stone bounced and then sank with a plop!
