OTHER CARNIVOROUS PLANTS There are more than 500 species of carnivorous plant, and they all have various clever ways of catching and digesting their prey. SARRACENIAS Also known as "pitcher plants," sarracenia have slippery jug-shaped leaves with a pool of liquid at the bottom. The plants produce a sweet nectar around the rim, which lures insects to them. When the insects land, they slip and fall into the pool below, where they are slowly digested. PITCHER PLANTS ARE QUITE LARGE, SO THEY CAN DIGEST MICE AND FROGS AS WELL AS INSECTS.

BUTTERWORTS The leaves of a butterwort are covered in two substances-a glue that traps insects that land on them, and another that helps digest them. Butterworts are sometimes kept in greenhouses to control pests. There are more than 40 kinds of butterwort. SUNDEWS These plants grow in bogs. They are covered with sticky hairs that have a bead of glue at the end. If an insect mistakes this glue for a drop of water and lands on the plant, it becomes stuck. Then, nearby hairs on the plants fold over the insect and start to digest it.
