9 The rainforests of Borneo

OLLIE'S MISSION NOTES THE RAINFORESTS OF BORNEO Borneo is the world's third-largest island. Its rich, tropical rainforests are bursting with life and are home to thousands of unique plant and animal species. RAINFOREST STRUCTURE Rainforests are split into four layers, and each one contains different plants and animals. Generally speaking, most animals stay within one layer.

EMERGENT LAVER At the top of a rainforest, the tallest trees poke out into the sunlight. Many tropical birds make their homes here. CANOPY From monkeys and bats to lizards and snakes, the canopy is the layer of the rainforest that is filled with most life. UNDERSTORY The understory is shady and dry. It's home to many smaller trees and shrubs, as well as frogs, snakes, ants, and termites. FOREST FLOOR The forest floor is dark and damp, making it the perfect habitat for insects and insect-eating mammals.
