OCEAN LIFE Sunlit zone. * Top 650 ft (200 m) of the ocean. * Lots of different animals live in this zone, including humpback whales. * It is also home to tiny creatures called plankton, which includes baby crabs and fish eggs. They float around on the currents. Many sea creatures depend on plankton for food. Twilight zone. * From 650 ft to 3,300 ft (200m to 1,000m) below the surface. * The little sunlight that reaches this zone gives it a faint blue glow. Fewer animals live here than in the sunlit zone. * Some areas of this zone don't have much oxygen, so the only animals that can live here have special adaptations. Midnight zone. * More than 3,300 ft (1,000 m) down, no light at all reaches this zone. * It is up to 33,000 ft (10,000 m) deep in places. * Some of the creatures that live here are bioluminescent—they create their own light. For example, the anglerfish has a lure on top of its head that glows in the dark to attract prey—a bit like a fishing pole.
