CHAPTER 1 A YEAR IN STERMONT Alexander's dad grinned up at the calendar on the wall. "Look at that, kiddo!" he said. "It's been one year since we moved to this kooky town!" Alexander rinsed out his cereal bowl. "Kooky?" he asked.

"Yeah, you know," his dad said. "There's always weird stuff happening here in stermont— flat tires, strange weather, power outages." Those were all monster attacks balloon goons, snombies, and zapper-bugs! thought Alexander. "Speaking of weird stuff..." his dad said. "Not every Kid has a birthday once every four years. That's why I'm throwing you the weirdest birthday party ever tomorrow!" He handed Alexander an invitation.

"I've already invited your friends Rip and Nikki," said Alexander's dad. "Feel free to invite anyone else!" He stuffed a stack of invitations into Alexander's backpack. "Jeez, dad," said Alexander. "I don't—" BLUBRRBRRBBRRR!! Alexander was interrupted by a low rumbling noise coming from outside. It sounded like a giant whoopee cushion. A monster! he thought. He started for the door.

"AI, wait!" yelled his dad. "Don't forget your lunch." He tossed Alexander his lunch box. "I packed your favorite treat!" "Triple-power-pucker pickles?" asked Alexander. "Precisely!" said his dad. "Oh, and be sure to share them with Rip and Nikki!" BLUBRRBRRBBRRR!! The noise outside was even louder. "Okay!" said Alexander. Unless they're already monster-chow!
