Introduction What is a rainforest? What are the contents of a rainforest? A rainforest is a warm, wet place. A rainforest has many tall trees, vines, and bright flowers. There are many wonderful things to see and to hear. Monkeys swing in the tops of trees. Frogs croak. Tiny birds fly by. Tree trunks are covered with green vines. The ground is very soft. The rainforest is pretty. It's also an important part of our world. This hummingbird lives in the rainforest of Costa Rica. You can hear the howler monkey scream in the rainforest.

CHAPTER 1 Inside the Rainforest Many plants and animals live in the rainforest. Many people live in neighborhoods near the rainforest, too. Plants, animals, and people all need the rainforest for food and shelter. The trees in the rainforest form a huge green cover, like a roof, over the forest. This cover is called the canopy. This map shows the world's rainforests. Think of a belt around the middle of the Earth. That is the equator. The rainforests are on that belt. When it rains, the water hits the tops of the trees. Then it falls down to the ground. The roots of the trees drink up the water. The water moves inside the tree to its top and into its leaves. Then, the green leaves give off moisture into the air. When there is enough moisture in the air, it rains again. CHAPTER 2 Food in the Rainforest Oranges, nuts, and many other foods grow in the rainforest. Trees and plants in the rainforest give off 20% of the oxygen in the world. People need oxygen to live. If trees in the rainforest are cut down, there will be less oxygen for everyone to breathe. The people who live near the rainforests make their homes from wood found there. An important crop is cacao. It grows in and near the rainforests. Hot cocoa is made with cacao. It is in candy bars, too. From Cacao to Chocolate Cacao plants grow in the cool shade of tall trees. Seed pods hang from the branches of trees. Inside these pods are cacao seeds. The seeds are dried in the sun until they are dark brown. Then they are ground, or crushed, into powder.
