Chapter 1 An Egg Hatches What is hatching from these eggs? Baby birds! The mother laid the eggs. The mother and father kept the eggs warm. The parents will give the babies food and keep them safe after they hatch. Soon the babies will grow up. They will care for themselves. Other animals hatch from eggs, too. Birds take care of their young, or babies. But many animals leave before their eggs hatch. Look at the eggs in these pictures. What will hatch? How will the babies eat? How will they stay safe? Wait and see!

Chapter 2 Big Changes A mother animal left the egg in this picture. The mother traveled many miles. She found a milkweed plant. She put this small egg on a leaf. Then she flew away. When the baby hatches, it will not look like its mother. The baby hatches. It is a hungry caterpillar! The caterpillar eats her egg. Then she eats the milkweed leaf. She grows for two weeks. She makes a case around herself. Now the caterpillar is a pupa.

Two more weeks pass. The pupa changed. She is a beautiful monarch butterfly! Now the butterfly will fly away. In a year, the butterfly will look for a milkweed leaf. What will the butterfly do when she finds a milkweed leaf?

Chapter 3 Make a Splash A small frog found a good place in the rain forest. She laid eggs. The mother left jelly around the eggs to keep them safe. Then she hopped away. The father stayed to watch over the eggs. The mother will come back when the eggs hatch. Tadpoles hatch from the eggs. The tadpoles wiggle onto their mother's back. The tadpoles look like fish. They have gills like fish, too. The tadpoles need to be in water to breathe. The mother puts her tadpoles in water.
