Woodland forests have trees that lose their leaves in the fall. Rain forests are usually hot and rainy places. Those are clues about what these forests are like. Where you find these forests is another clue. The equator is an imaginary line around the middle of Earth. This map shows where Earth's woodland forests and rain forests are. Rain forests are close to the equator. Woodland forests are farther from it.

Chapter 2 Checking Out Climates Woodland forests and rain forests grow in very different climate zones. If you like a climate with Sun and snow, a woodland forest is the place to go! Here, the weather changes with each season. If you like hot, wet weather, a rain forest might be for you. You could swim all year-round. But you would get wet from the rain! It rains almost every day.

Chapter 3 What Grows There? The weather is always changing in a woodland forest. The trees change, too. In summer, leaves cover the trees. In fall, the leaves change color and fall. Most trees have no leaves in winter. Spring brings new leaves. Half of all the different kinds of plants on Earth live in rain forests! Why? The weather is always hot and wet there. That means rain-forest plants can grow all year long.
