Chapter 2 Saving Sea Animals California Sea Otters California sea otters are mammals. Sea otters were hunted for their fur. The sea otter became endangered. Oil spills from oil tankers also harm sea otters. If the otters swallow the oil or get it on their fur, they may die. The good news is that sea otters are no longer in danger. Today, the number of sea otters is growing.

Manatees Florida manatees are large sea mammals. They live in fresh water or in salt water. They can live in any warm water where the plants they eat grow. People in Florida are helping manatees. They have put up signs for boaters to look out for these animals. Some places in Florida keep safe habitats where manatees can live. No boats are allowed there.

Green Sea Turtles Green sea turtles are reptiles. Once a year, female sea turtles lay their eggs on the beach. People kill these turtles for their meat and their shells. They also eat the turtles' eggs. Green sea turtles are now in danger. People in Florida guard beaches where green sea turtles lay their eggs. They mark turtles' nests to protect the eggs until they hatch. As soon as the eggs hatch, the babies run to the sea.
