Packed with Power Some plants are packed with power! Fresh fruits and vegetables are filled with vitamins and minerals. They can keep you healthy. They can help you grow and make you strong. They can give you energy. Plus, they are fun to grow and taste great! The whole family can work together to grow fruits and vegetables. You can even ask a neighbor to help. Basil is an herb. Fresh basil can make foods look and taste better. Some herbs and spices are also packed with power. These plant bits add color and flavor to food. Herbs can help you get better when you are sick. They can even help you sleep well.

Chapter 1 Flavorful Fruits and Vegetables Fruits and vegetables are full of vitamins. Orange vegetables, such as carrots, sweet potatoes, and pumpkins, have a lot of Vitamin A. Do you like sweet fruits, such as cantaloupe, apricots, peaches, papayas, and mangoes? Their orange color means that they are packed full of Vitamin A, too. Eat five to seven servings of fruits and vegetables every day. A peach is one good and tasty serving! Vitamin A keeps eyesight strong. It helps your body fight germs. It keeps your skin healthy. And it helps the cells in your body to grow. And that helps you grow taller and stronger. Count On Carrots Have you ever heard the saying that eating carrots will help you to see better in the dark? Well, it's not true. But carrots will keep your eyes healthy so you can see well. Carrots burst with Vitamin A. Rabbits have the right idea! A rabbit makes a stand for carrots.

Make a huge fruit salad with raspberries, blueberries, guavas, grapefruit, and oranges. Yum! That's a sweet treat that's packed with Vitamin C. Or try some red and green bell peppers, tomatoes, broccoli, and parsley. Eat them fresh in a salad, or steamed just a little. Don't be the kind of cook that drowns them in water. That will make the vitamins lose their strength. Fruit salad is packed with Vitamin C. You need Vitamin C for healthy cells, bones, teeth, and blood. It even helps heal cuts and bruises. That's not all. Vitamin C also helps your brain work better. It's an important vitamin! C the Truth Some people say that Vitamin C helps keep colds away. That's not true. But it can help shorten the time your cold lasts. Orange juice is packed with Vitamin C.

Fruits and vegetables have a lot of vitamins. They also have minerals. Minerals keep you healthy, too. Iron is a very important mineral. It helps blood carry oxygen to all the parts of the body. You may feel weak and tired if you don't have enough iron. Red meat, nuts, grains, lentils, beans, and leafy green vegetables have a lot of iron. Soy beans and food made from soy, such as tofu and soy milk, have iron in them, too. These soy foods contain iron. milk nuts tofu soy beans cheese Calcium is another very important mineral. Children need calcium to build strong bones and teeth. Older people need calcium to keep their bones strong. Very Vegan Some people don't eat meat or dairy products. These people are called vegans. They can get a lot of their iron and calcium by eating power-packed plants. A bowl of vegetables can be a full meal.
