Let's Recycle! by Dana Carroll With the Editors of TIME FOR KIDS

Chapter 1 Tons of Garbage Every day we throw away things we do not want to use anymore. We throw away old newspapers, metal cans, plastic bottles, juice cartons, and glass jars. Sometimes the garbage we throw away goes to a garbage dump. Garbage takes up a lot of space. It is not a good way to use the land. Sometimes garbage goes to a sanitary landfill. People bury garbage there. A landfill looks and smells better than a garbage dump. But there is still too much garbage!

Chapter 2 Reduce It and Reuse It Everyone can help reduce the amount of garbage. We can buy things that last a long time. You can only use a paper cup once. But you can use a drinking glass again and again. We can reuse things made of paper, plastic, metal, and glass. We can find new ways to use them. We can use a glass jar as a flower vase. We can use a carton to grow plants. An artist can use old cans to make art!

When people give away old things, it reduces garbage. There are places that take old furniture, clothes, and toys. Some places fix up old things so they are almost as good as new.

Chapter 3 Recycle It Towns all over the United States are cutting down on waste, or garbage. People reduce, reuse, and recycle, too. The people in California had a "Clean the Beach Day." People picked up all the litter on the beach. They recycled thousands of metal cans and plastic bottles. The people made their beaches beautiful and clean again.
