A cave is a hole in the earth. You can see surprising shapes in a cave. Caves are dark. We need lights to see inside them. Some caves are small. Others are long. Most caves are in rock. What can make a hole in rock? Water can! cave entrance rock

Rain falls into small cracks in the rock. The water makes the cracks bigger. Slowly, a cave forms. The water makes shapes called formations. Some formations go up from the floor. Others hang down from the ceiling.

Texas has more than 9,000 caves! Many of them are long and deep. This map shows some of the caves in Texas. Longhorn Cavern Inner Space Cavern Caverns of Sonora Natural Bridge Caverns West Cave Preserve Wonder World Cave Cascade Caverns Texas Natural Bridge Caverns is one of the biggest caves in Texas. Some formations in this cave look like familiar things. This rock formation is called a fried egg.

Inner Space Cavern is another Texas cave. It is under a road. Road workers found the cave. The workers made a big hole to get into the cave. hole hole ladder rock tusk This old animal tusk, or tooth, was in the cave. Scientists found beautiful formations in the cave. They found animal bones, too. Some of the bones are 20,000 years old!
