A groundhog is a small animal. Groundhogs make dens under the ground. claws A groundhog uses its claws to dig. The homes are called dens. Groundhogs sleep much of the winter. den A groundhog has a warm coat of fur.

This groundhog is waking up after a long winter. Sometimes a groundhog sees its shadow when it comes out of the den. snow There is snow on the ground.

What makes a shadow? Sun makes light. Light makes a shadow. sunlight tree shadow If the sun was out, we would see our shadows. If the sun was not out, we would not see our shadows. When can you see your shadow? Can you see your shadow now?

This groundhog is coming out of its den. The sun is out. The groundhog will see its shadow. This groundhog can see its shadow. The groundhog will go into the den again. Some people think this means there will be six more weeks of winter.
