CHAPTER SEVEN The Five dropped Simi back at the blue gate. 'We'll see you at Tidy's Garden tomorrow, Anne said. 'Be ready to make lots of new friends.'

'I'm a little bit scared, Simi said, looking nervous. 'Don't worry!' George said. 'You can tell them all about Cookie and soon you'll have your very own beautiful new dog. You won't feel shy with a puppy by your side!' 'I can't wait,' Simi said, smiling widely. 'See you tomorrow.'

At Kirrin Cottage Dick stepped back to admire his cake. He had just finished icing it and was ready to present it to the others. 'Who wants cake?' he called. Julian, Anne, George and Timmy trooped into the kitchen. 'Should we wait for Aunt Fanny to come home before we cut it?' Anne asked.

'I say we taste it first,' George said. 'I'm famished.' Dick cut a slice and divided it into four portions. Anne took the first bite. Her face fell as she chewed slowly. Dick didn't notice as he handed Julian and George their share. They popped it into their mouths and then swallowed hurriedly.

Dick's wide smile disappeared as soon as he took a big bite for himself. The cake was awful. He must have squeezed too much lemon in because it tasted like bitter medicine. 'Woof!' Timmy impatiently barked, grabbing one end of the tablecloth. He wanted his share of the cake. 'Timmy, watch it, George warned. 'Don't—'
