Chapter 4

CHAPTER FOUR The Five quickly made their way down the path and across the sandy beach to where they had left their little boat earlier that day. They threw the picnic things inside, pulled on their coats and jumped in.

'George or Julian, one of you had better row- you're the fastest,' said Dick. They made swift progress across the bay, but the waves were rising and falling in the strong wind.

'Faster, Julian... faster, shouted Anne. 'I'm going as quickly as I can!' Julian puffed.

As they neared the cliff face Julian stopped rowing and held the boat steady. If he wasn't careful, they would be pushed on to the rocks. 'What do we do now?' cried Anne. 'We can't get any closer to the lamb.' 'Julian,' said George, 'do you think you could keep the boat steady for a while longer so two of us could swim out to the lamb? It's not far.'

Julian nodded as he strained against the tide. 'It'll be tough in this wind, but I think I can manage.' 'Great! Dick- come with me. Anne- get the rope at the ready, called George.
