CHAPTER SEVEN That evening the Five sat by the fireplace. George gave Timmy a hug and ruffled his ears. 'You were very good today, she said. 'You stopped us from making a mistake about an innocent person.'
'Us?' Dick echoed. 'Er, I think it was you and Julian. Anne and I didn't say anything. George scowled. 'You didn't stop us.' 'We couldn't have even if we'd wanted to, Dick shot back. Aunt Fanny walked in then with a tray of scones and some hot milk. 'Mrs Patel sent you some of the scones with cream and strawberry jam as a thank-you for solving the mystery of the missing lid, she said. 'Hurray!' Dick shouted.

They tucked into the scones and licked the cream and jam from their lips with joy. Even Timmy was allowed to have one. 'This is the perfect ending to the day, said Dick, as berry-red jam dripped from his spoon on to his pyjama top.
Anne rolled her eyes. Timmy agreed. 'Woof!'
