Famous Five · 1 Five and the Missing Prize
CHAPTER FIVE 'Let me pass, please, said an old lady as she shuffled her way through the crowd towards the boy. 'Up you get, Johnny.'
'Do you know this boy, Mrs Dutton?' Aunt Fanny asked. Mrs Dutton nodded. 'Yes, he's my grandson, but he's not a thief. I'm the one who donated the silver tray and tea set for the competition prize. 'But what's all this about a ring?' Mrs Patel asked.
I forgot to remove the emerald ring that I kept in the teapot for safe keeping, Mrs Dutton explained. 'When I remembered this afternoon, I sent Johnny to get it back.'
'And I did!' Johnny said. I thought I could just take the ring without anyone noticing, but the teapot was where everyone could see it. So I switched off the lights, quickly ran over and took the ring. Then that dog barked at me and I panicked. 'But why didn't you just come and talk to me?' Mrs Patel asked. 'I would've returned it to you.' Johnny shrugged. I tried, but you kept saying that only people entering the competition could join the queue. And I didn't have any jam.

'Oh, dear, Mrs Patel said, shaking her head sadly. I'm really sorry for causing trouble,' Johnny said. I didn't mean to. I was just trying to get my grandmother's ring back.' He pulled the ring out of his pocket and held it up.
