CHAPTER ONE It was the half term holidays and the Five were back together at Kirrin Cottage. George was mopping the kitchen floor that Timmy had covered in muddy

pawprints. 'This kitchen had better stay clean now, Timmy, she warned. 'No more mess!' Timmy was wagging his tail as Julian, Dick and Anne walked in. What are we doing this afternoon?' Julian asked.

'Let's stay in and find different ways to eat jam, Dick said, spotting some on the table. He picked up a spoon and scooped blackberry jam out of the jar and into his mouth. 'Mmm, he said, rubbing his tummy. 'You dropped some on your T-shirt,' Anne pointed out, rolling her eyes.

Dick grinned, wiping his top with his hand. 'This is delicious! I'm so glad we picked all those berries at the end of the summer holidays and made this jam. I've been dreaming about eating it for months.' Aunt Fanny walked into the kitchen and pulled another jar out of the cupboard. We're going to enter this last jar in the Best Jam Competition at the village show this evening. Dick's spoon clattered to the floor. 'You're giving our last jar away?' he asked in a shocked voice. Aunt Fanny ruffled Dick's hair, laughing. 'I think your jam has a very good chance of being crowned the winner, she said.
