THE HUNT FOR HONEY Honey is made by honeybees all over the world. The bees make honey from plants. The Honey Hive Flowers have a sweet, sugary liquid called nectar. Bees suck the nectar out of the plants to make honey. Bees keep nectar in a second stomach called their honey stomach.

AT THE HIVE After they get the nectar, the bees fly to their hive. At the hive, they pass the nectar from bee to bee. BEE-MADE HIVE HUMAN-MADE HIVES Bees make their own hives. They can also live in human-made hives. Then, the bees put the nectar in the honeycomb cells of their hive. They fan the nectar with their wings to turn it into honey. After that, they cover each cell with beeswax to keep the honey inside. A BEE CLIMBING INTO A HONEYCOMB CELL

BEEKEEPERS Beekeepers take care of human-made hives. These hives have wooden frames that hold the honeycomb. Beekeepers make sure the bees in their hives are healthy. Bees make honey for food. But they often make more than they need. Beekeepers gather the extra honey from the hive. Honeycomb in a wooden frame

GATHERING THE HONEY When a beekeeper gathers honey, they may spray smoke on the bees. This stops the bees from stinging. Beekeepers have a special tool to spray smoke. Then, the beekeeper takes the frames out of the hive and cuts wax off of the honeycomb cells. A beekeeper uses a knife to cut the wax from the honeycomb.
