The Best Birthday Party Ever One morning I woke up to see Mom and Ollie standing by my bed with a bunch of balloons. For a moment I didn't know what was happening….Then I remembered. It was my birthday! "Happy birthday, sweetie!" Mom smiled, and she kissed me. "You have a very exciting day ahead of you. Waffles for breakfast, presents to open…and then this afternoon it's your party!" "Weezi-weezi-weezi!" Ollie said, and he gave me a big smile with all his gums showing. I decided he meant "Happy birthday, Ella."
—The party was in our living room. Mom had invited all my friends and made a pink cake and there was a magician. Mom explained to me that the magician couldn't do real magic like a fairy, only pretend magic. But it would still be fun. It was a costume party too, so everyone was dressed up. I came as a clown and Lenka came as an astronaut. Tom came as a caterpillar. "I wish I really were an astronaut," Lenka said. "I would fly to the moon." "I would be a space caterpillar," Tom said. "I would chase you around the moon." "And I would be a space clown," I said, "and fly around chasing you both!" We all chased each other around the room, making space-monster noises. Then my Not-Best Friend Zoe arrived. She was dressed as a princess, and she didn't join in the game. She just stood by the door and gave us a horrible look. Zoe is my Not-Best Friend because she says mean things
and pushes people. She waits until the teacher isn't looking, and then she shoves you and runs away. Mom says Zoe needs to grow up. I think Zoe just needs to stop being mean. Mom and Dad were at the party too, dressed up like pirates. Aunty Jo was dressed as a cat, with ears and a tail. Granny was dressed as Granny. The magician started and we sat down to watch. But he wasn't a very good magician.
He made a coin disappear, but then he couldn't find it again. Then he did a trick with cards, but he dropped all the cards on the floor, slipped on them and banged his head. "Tragic," Aunty Jo said, shaking her head. "Can't he do any better than that?" Granny added. "Shhh!" Mom said. "You'll hurt his feelings."
