Escape from the Island

SCENE 1: IN THE BOAT Five friends are on holiday. One day, they go out in q small boat in the bay. The sea is calm. All of a sudden, Pash sees dark clouds heading towards them. Look! It's a storm. We'd better get back to shore! It's coming too fast! A big wave crashes into them. The boat flips over and throws everyone into the water.

Help! We'll all drown! Hang on, everyone! The children are whirled through the water, but they hang on to the boat. The storm passes. The sea's calm again. But there's no sign of land. The friends scramble back aboard the boat. Everyone's terrified; they can't see the shore any more. They're alone at sea.

I wish my dad was here. Well, he's not. But we'll be OK. How do you know? The sea is silent. It's like the world has turned to water. The oars are still here. Who's the best rower? Me, I expect. You would say that. Stop it, both of you! Pash picks up the oars and tries to row.

I'm hungry. We're all hungry. I'm really thirsty. Ben, be quiet. I'm going to drink some seawater. Don't do that! It's salty. It'll make you thirstier.

(sighing) How will anyone find us? The friends feel very small. Suddenly . . . Look! (Everyone looks out to sea. ) What is it? Is it another storm? No. It's white. It's shining in the sun. That's sand. Don't you see? It's an island! Come on, everybody. Row to the island!
