We use fire to cook. We use fire to keep us warm. Fireworks make fire to entertain us. But fire can be dangerous . . . That's why people are trained to be firefighters.

How firefighting started For hundreds of years, people have been finding new ways to put out fires. 100: Roman soldiers used leather buckets. 1666: During the Great Fire of London, people passed water buckets from hand to hand. 1700: Wooden handcarts carried wooden water tubs.

1900: Steam fire engines were pulled by horses. 1924: Motorised fire engines were used. 1955: Planes helped to fight fires.
