Magnets in the Home FOCUS Question How do you use magnets in your home?

How Many Magnets? How many magnets do you think are in your home? Maybe there are four on the refrigerator. Maybe you have two toys that use magnets. But there are probably magnets hidden all around your home! Magnets have many uses.

Magnetic Holders Magnets stick to certain metals. They also stick to each other. This makes magnets good for holding things up and holding things together. Magnets hold pictures on your refrigerator. They can also hold doors closed.

Motors and Magnets Magnets are inside many machines in your house. Many machines have a motor. Motors use electricity and magnets to make things move. When you plug in a machine electricity goes through a motor. The magnets make parts of the motor move. The motor makes other parts of the machine move.

Magnets in Toys Many toys have magnets. Magnets help pieces stick together. Many toys that drive, roll, or turn have a motor. All those motors have magnets inside them!

Magnets Make Sounds Speakers let us hear music. Electricity makes tiny magnets in a speaker shake back and forth. The magnets make other parts of the speaker move. Then the air around these parts moves. Moving air makes sounds. Radios and TVs have speakers. This means they use magnets. So do phones.
