Yum! Yuck! FOCUS Question Why do people like some foods but dislike other foods?
Sense Your Food Think of all the different foods you have tasted. There are so many kinds! You like some foods but not others. Why? Foods have different properties. You can learn about a food by using your five senses. You can look at food and touch it. You can smell food and taste it. Sometimes you can even hear food!
See Your Food When you look at food, you can see its color. Think of a salad. The lettuce is green The tomatoes are red. The cheese is yellow or white. Foods also have different shapes and sizes. Tomatoes are small and round. Lettuce leaves are big and flat. The cheese is cut into small slices.
Many foods have bright colors. Bright or dark colors can mean the food has a strong flavor, or taste. Color can also tell you if the food is still fresh and good to eat. Math Moment You ate 14 green grapes, 9 purple grapes, and 7 black grapes. How many of the grapes were not purple?
Feel Your Food Foods have different textures, too. Texture is how something feels. Some foods are soft. Some are hard Some foods can stretch. Others break. We heat or cool foods to make them taste better. Would you want to eat a hot salad or chilly chicken soup? No way! Think About It Heating and cooling foods changes their texture. What happens when you heat up cheese or put juice in the freezer?
Smell Your Food You walk by the lunchroom. You smell tacos. Suddenly, you are hungry! Smell tells us what things are. Every food has its own smell. You can probably tell if you will like a food by how it smells.
