Working and Playing School may seem like work. You read and do math. Your brain gets tired! Playing does not seem like work. It is fun! You run and throw. Your whole body gets tired! But did you know that when you play, you are doing work?

What Is Work? In science, work means to make something move. To do work, you have to use a force. A force can be a push or a pull. Push a swing. Pull a wagon. These are two kinds of work. If you push or pull on something but it does not move, that is not work.

Get Moving! You can do work by moving your own body. Run! Your feet push against the ground, and you move forward. Climb! You pull with your arms and push with your legs to move up.

Kick a Ball When you kick a ball, you push it with your foot. The ball moves in the direction of the push. The kick is work. Kick the ball with more force. It will go a longer distance. You are doing more work.

Catch a Ball Is catching a ball work? You push against the ball with your glove. The ball stops moving. This is not work. To do work, you must make something move after you push or pull it. Stopping a ball is not work.
