" You are slow, " said Hare to Tortoise. " Your legs are too short. " " I get to places that I want to go, " said Tortoise. " I just keep walking. "

" I can run fast with my long legs, " said Hare. " I get to places very quickly. " " We can have a race, " said Tortoise. " Who can be first to get to that tree by the river?"

Hare laughed at Tortoise. " I'll be the winner, " he said. " I will be there first. " All the animals came to watch the race.

Hare got ready to run and Tortoise got ready to walk. " Get ready, set, go! " shouted the animals. Hare ran away quickly. Tortoise just walked slowly. " Go, Tortoise! Go faster! " the animals shouted.

Hare looked back. " I can't see Tortoise coming, " he said. So Hare stopped to eat some grass. Then he went to sleep.
