18-THE MUMMY INSIDE THE COFFIN

THE MUMMY INSIDE THE COFFIN I decided to sleep in another room. I took a pillow and a blanket. Then I crept downstairs to the cellar. Ah, peace and quiet at last. I fell asleep in an instant. I was happily snoring away when I heard that creaking sound. I woke up with a start. I lit the candle beside me. "Is that you, Benjamin?" I asked in a shaky voice. No one answered. I lifted the candle so I could see better. Then I saw it. My eyes popped open wide.

It was a MUMMY! And it was staggering right toward me! Behind it stood an open coffin made of stone. For the millionth time that night, I cried out. "Help... heeeelp!" I yelled as loud as I could. My voice echoed in the dark, empty room. Oh, how I wished I was home! Thea was beside me in no time flat. "Well, what is it this time?" she asked warily. I puffed up my fur. Now my sister would see I was telling the truth. After all, a mummy is a mummy. You can't make that up. "Go ahead," I announced, standing up tall. "Take a look over there. Well, what do you see?" I expected my sister to whip out her camera. I expected her to gasp with surprise. Instead, she closed her eyes. Then she shrieked, "I don't see a Thing!!!"

I turned around, astonished. The mummy and the coffin had both vanished! I went to check. No trace of them near the suit of armor. Nothing! "I-I can't believe it! This just isn't possible," I stammered, confused. Thea grabbed me by the ear. "First it's a ghost, now it's a mummy. What's next, a fire-breathing dragon?" she hissed. Benjamin was busy checking out the room. He showed me a piece of toilet paper. It was stuck on the floor right where I had seen the mummy. Strange. Without a word, Benjamin pulled out his pad. Then he jotted down some notes.
