Growing Pains

The Barths left the coffee shop and headed to the park . They saw many children there. Some were at the playground. Others were playing baseball. “ Oh, she’s flying a kite! ” Jane pointed to a little girl with a red kite. “ Is that your daughter?” a woman sitting on a bench asked.

“ Excuse me?” Jane was confused. “ That girl, is she yours?” the woman asked again. “ Of course not! ” Jane shouted hotly. “ I’m too young to have children! ” She gave the woman a nasty stare and walked off. The woman looked at Jane strangely.

“ What did that woman say to you?” asked Cy. “ She thought I was a mother! ” Jane wasstill upset. “ But Jane, ” Panther said gently. ” You are grown-up now. ” Before Jane could answer, they heard familiar sounds.

” It’s the ice cream truck! ” Bobby jumped up and down. ” Since coffee was so yucky, ” grinned Cy, ” we deserve something sweet! ” The grown-up Barths raced across the park. Being bigger and faster, they passed all the little children. They got to the ice cream truck first.

” Double caramel chocolate fudge, please, ” said Bobby, rubbing his hands. “ Excuse me, ” the driver said coldly. “ Maybe the children should go first. ” He pointed to the line of children behind the Barths. “ I got here first, ” Bobby replied stubbornly.
