The Fifth Wish

The barn door was tightly locked from the outside. Then the children heard Farmer Jenkins’ voice. “ It might be a coyote, ” he said. “ Or maybe someone’s trying to steal our horses, ” the farmer’s son replied. “ Bring the guns, just in case, ” Farmer Jenkins shouted.

“ Guns?” Cy gulped. We have to do something, ” Panther whispered. The children looked around. There was no place to hide . Meanwhile Farmer Jenkins was getting closer. “ I’m scared, ” cried Jane just as Panther ran toward the ladder.

” I have an idea! ” Panther said. ” Climb back up to the second floor. ” The others wondered what she was up to. The farmer and his son were standing just outside the door. ” Here’s the key to the lock, Pa, ” said the son. He rattled a bunch of keys. “ I guess we have no choice, ” whispered Cy. ”

He climbed back up after Panther. Bobby and Jane quickly followed. ” Help me pull this up, ” Panther ordered. Panther and Cy pulled the ladder up. They dragged it to the open window. ” I get it now, ” smiled Cy.

The older children lowered the ladder out from the window. Then they leaned it against the barn. ” Come on, Jane! ” Cy shouted. ” Climb down the ladder. ” ” What if I fall?” She sniffed. ” You won’t. I’ve got you, ” he assured her.
