Flying High
Cy, Panther, and Bobby stared at Jane. ” Did you just wish for wings?” Cy asked in disbelief. Jane’s eyes welled up with tears as she nodded. ” I’ve always wanted to fly. ” Suddenly everyone started talking at once. ” Ahem. ” Huey cleared his throat.
When nobody paid attention to him, Huey clapped his hands loudly. ” If I may interrupt, ” he said, “ it is Jane’s wish to fly. “ And it is too late to undo her wish! ” Huey crossed his arms and leaned against his shell. “ Oh, my back is itchy. ” Bobby tried to reach behind him to scratch his back.
” Me too, ” Panther said. ” What’s going on?” Cy turned his head to look at his back. Two white bumps appeared. Then they started to grow and grow and grow. Soon the children looked as if they had a huge white bag on each shoulder. ” Oh, my goodness, ” whispered Panther.
” We have wings. ” She wiggled the white humps on her back. Feathers flew everywhere. ” But how do we fly?” asked Bobby. Huey closed his eyes . ” Don’t look at me, ” he said. “ My fins aren’t for flying. ” With that, Huey disappeared back into his shell.
Cy lowered the shell back into the well. Meanwhile, the others tried to use their wings. Bobby squeezed his eyes together. With his fists clenched, he made groaning noises. “ You look like you have to use the restroom, ” giggled Jane.
