Sweet Iced Lemonade
When Nina arrived at summer camp, Mr. Dunn was setting a basket of lemons on the picnic table. “ Good morning, Mr. Dunn! ” she called. “ Good morning, Nina, ” Mr. Dunn said. Nina picked three lemons out of the basket. Her aunt had tried to teach her how to juggle last week. But Nina still couldn’t do it.
Plop, plop, plop. The lemons landed on the ground. By now the other campers arrived. “ Hey, Nina! ” Bobby laughed. “ Did you sign up for clown school?” Nina frowned at him. “ I’m not a clown! ”
Izzie picked up the lemons. “ Do we need these lemons today?” Mr. Dunn nodded. “ It’s okay that they fell. We’re going to squeeze all of the juice out of them anyway. ” “ Yay! We’re making lemonade! ” Izzie cried.
Inside the gym the kids gathered around Mr. Dunn. “ Lemonade is one of my favorite summer drinks, ” the teacher said. “ It’s one of mine too! ” said Izzie. “ I like it really sweet. ” “ Then you’ll love this recipe, ” Mr. Dunn said.
Ethan read the board. “ To make the syrup, we have to heat the sugar and water until the sugar dissolves. But how will we know when the sugar dissolves?” “ It’ll disappear, ” said Mr. Dunn. “ And turn into a clear syrup. ” Ethan and Jason made the syrup. The other campers cut lemons. Mr. Dunn handed forks to the lemon-cutters. “ Now we remove the seeds. ”
