At Home
Life returned to normal. The Battle of Toad Hall was over. And Toad’s party was over. The four friends went back to their old lives.
One day Rat was busy writing a poem. “ What has Toad been doing?” he asked Mole. Mole was reading by the fire. “ Toad bought the jailer’s daughter a dress, ” he said.
“ Wow! ” said Rat. “ He gave her some pearls too, ” said Mole. “ Well, she did help him escape, ” said Rat. Rat stretched his toes closer to the fire.
“ Toad wrote her a nice note too, ” said Mole. “ He did?” asked Rat. “ Yes, he said he was very thankful, ” said Mole. Rat stared into the fire, thinking.
“ Did he pay the train engineer too?” asked Rat. “ Yes. He even paid the possum! ” said Mole. “ And he told her he was sorry. ”
