Breakfast at Toad Hall

The next morning Toad slept late. As usual, he was the last at breakfast. The kitchen was empty. The table was messy.

“ Egg shells?” said Toad, looking around. “ Cold toast? No coffee? Didn’t they save anything good for me?” He heard laughter through the window.

Toad went outside. Mole, Rat, and Badger were sitting in the garden. “ Did you see the Chief Weasel?” laughed Rat. “ He crashed through Toad’s window! ”

“ His face looked like this! ” laughed Mole. Mole made a funny face. “ And when Badger waved his club—, ” said Rat. “ The weasels crawled under the table! ” cried Mole.

Mole and Rat kicked their short legs in the air. They laughed until their stomachs hurt. Badger sat in a chair reading the newspaper.
