The raccoon stopped the car. “ Well, why not?” he said. “ I’ll let you drive for a while. ” “ Oh, thank you, sir! ” said Toad.

Toad jumped into the driver’s seat. “ Now turn the key, ” said the raccoon. “ Vroom! ” went the engine. Toad pretended he didn’t know what to do.

“ Put your foot on the gas pedal, ” said the raccoon. “ Now press it slowly. ” The car started down the road. “ She did it! ” said the chipmunk.

“ Imagine! ” said the squirrel. “ A washwoman is driving a car! ” Toad went a little faster. Then he drove faster still.

“ Be careful, washwoman! ” yelled the squirrel. The raccoon tried to take the wheel. Toad pushed him away.
